SMALL SPACE LIVING SERIES- 800 SQUARE FOOT- A-FRAME HOME

I think that this little A-Fram from Insieme House was one of the first “Small Spaces” I found on Instagram. I was was happy to have found someone sharing ideas for Small Space Living and with MAJOR style. I love how Astrid maximizes their outdoor space during all the seasons, key to making Small Spaces and entertaining mix! I also love her answers to the rapid fire questions at the end, talking about how living in a smaller space forces you to be pretty tidy all the time. I have to say I have noticed that too- everything has a place and the family all knows where that place is. I hope you gather some ideas, just as I did!

Home Motto
I believe that a home should be constantly evolving, just like its inhabitants!

Why a smaller home?
To be perfectly honest, the decision wasn’t necessarily intentional as far as being a deliberate lifestyle choice. We had a small A-frame cottage and decided to make it our year-round residence, and in order to make it livable for our family of three, we had to do some serious renovation on both the interior and exterior (which we undertook ourselves). As our needs have grown and changed over the years, we made the necessary adjustments to our living situation by recently adding on an extension. The property is a bit larger now, yes, but still very much in scale with the original structure and is still a humbly moderate-sized home, by American standards.

What is your square footage total of home? The original structure, which comprises the A-frame and is where our actual living space is at the moment while we do the finish work on the new addition to our home, is less than 800 square feet. The total  finished square footage will be 2,052 square feet.

Kitchen:

Where do you keep all of the small appliances and do you have a pantry? We keep those stashed in the cabinets below the peninsula in our tiny kitchen.
Do you have a pantry? Our kitchen “pantry” is a very shallow built-in, to the right of the sink, with an enclosed lower cabinet and open shelving up top. It’s rather deceptive because it actually stores quite a substantial amount of canned, dried and packaged goods!
Where is all the food? In the refrigerator and in the pantry cabinet. Spices, legumes, etc. are stored in jars on open shelves.

Closets:

Are you able to fit all your clothes in your master bedroom? Our master bedroom is essentially the peak of the A-frame, and it is an absolutely TINY room with only enough space for a full-sized bed. Because we don’t have conventional closets in there, we took advantage of the recessed space of the angled walls on either side of the room by turning those into “closet space”. They are framed out and have rods for hanging clothes as well as an upper shelf for folded items and such, and are concealed by curtains.

Small Space Living Rapid Fire Questions-

SEASONAL DECOR- We keep all of our seasonal décor in our outdoor sheds when not in use.
CLEANING SUPPLIES- Kitchen cleaning supplies are kept in the cabinet under the kitchen sink. We have a small closet in our bathroom where we keep bathroom cleaning supplies, as well as brooms, mops and vacuums, etc.
ORGANIZING PAPERS- We have a little office nook in our living room and all of the paperwork lives in a file cabinet.
ENTERTAINING-  I love to entertain and despite the obvious spatial constraints of the A-frame, it has never stopped us from hosting dinners and having parties with family and friends. During the warmer months, we spend a lot of time outdoors and entertain frequently on our back deck.
SENTIMENTAL ITEMS- If a memento is meaningful and will bring a smile in the future, then I believe it is worth keeping. I keep those special items in boxes in the lower cabinets of the built-in bookshelf wall in our living room.
HARDEST PART- Admittedly, the most challenging aspect for me is contending with the limited space for storage, generally speaking. We were very mindful of these limitations when we were renovating the A-frame, and resorted to creating built-ins wherever possible to maximize our storage potential. It forces you to be incredibly organized, at all times, because space is such a precious commodity!
BEST PART- The smaller the house, the less time you have to spend cleaning it!
