My Little Cowgirl’s Room
The key to decorating is to find one thing you love and build off of that. Find colors in that piece and pull for accent pieces. Use things that are out of the norm and if you’re like me find some old vintage pieces to help you fill some space. Flowers, greenery, and succulents make everything feel more at home. Stay true to you and it will all come together!
When I found out I was having a little girl. I knew 2 things. I knew I wanted her name to be Cherokee and I knew I was in a lot of trouble! The inspiration for her room honestly came from her name. Most babies/toddler rooms are subtle pink colors but I have never been a “blush pink” kinda gal. I knew, just like me, Cherokee was going to have a very bold personality. So we went with very BOLD colors.
Fuschia, Turquoise, lime green, purple, navy blue. That’s our style. I wanted to go with a Navajo print style also. Anything Aztec and even Spanish style, I’m all about. I love the brightness of all the colors and to be real honest her room might just be my favorite one of the whole house! I feel happy when I walk in there and see all of my favorite colors.
When we moved to this house I knew her room needed an update. She used to have serape bedding and let’s be honest, it’s a little overdone now. I have been wanting to change it for a while but I just haven’t found anything I loved or fit within the theme I was going for.
One day in world market I saw this HUGE pillow and my heart stopped. It was perfect. Then I about had a heart attack when I found the rug to match. I bought both on the spot. Off to Target I went of course to find bedding and things to go with this inspiring pillow.
I found the white bedding and I already had the fur throw and the other pillows. But for real, do you know how hard it is to find HOT PINK FUSCHIA sheets and curtains in a world that loves pastel colors?! After a week of going into EVERY.SINGLE.STORE in Amarillo that had bedding and curtains I resorted to Amazon. Now, something you should know, I’m picky…. so after 5 Amazon orders bought and returned I finally found the right shade of pink for her room! I might be a tad OCD about colors matching perfectly….
Her headboard, dresser, and entertainment center are actually all pieces from my room when I was a little girl. My mom painted them turquoise when I was 12 or 13 I think. I love that I was able to pass them on to Cherokee.
The painted canvas was a gift from my stepdad, Levi. He painted it and gave it to me before she was born. This is a piece I want her to keep forever.
The longhorn skull came off her great grandaddy’s ranch on her daddy’s side. It used to be painted kind of like a serape blanket but we changed it to all black when we moved to this house and changed up her room a bit. I am absolutely in love with her headdresses and honestly, they came from some site I found on Instagram. The C & R letters were displayed at her baby shower. My mom bought the big tin letters from Hobby Lobby and added some paint and glitter! The toy chest is actually a quilt box. I bought it for the amazing artist, Jennifer Casebeer. I have been in love with her artwork since I found her.
The vintage baby bed is another one of my favorites. My mom found it at some junk store and fixed it up. Cherokee plays with it a lot and I had to do everything I could to keep her out of it.
Her wall of bows is a little excessive. I know. But I live in Texas y’all. Isn’t every little girl’s room filled with gobs of bows?! I love that her bow wall just added a lot more fun colors to her room.
So my little girl LOVES to read as much as I love her bows. Book after book after book. Normally her books just were thrown in a basket but I hated the way it looked. A little messy. Plus, her room is small and adding another piece of furniture just wasn’t going to work for that space. So LIGHT BULB finally clicked and I kicked myself for why I never thought of it before, why not just use her little entertainment center to store her books. She doesn’t have a TV in her room. I’d never see her if she had a TV in her room because she loves her movies. (Ok side note: do you ever get like super excited when you come up with a stupid, totally not all that great idea but it makes you happy deep down inside so you just take in all the joy that it gives you. That was me. I was seriously over the moon about how I thought about turning the entertainment center into a bookshelf. Silly I know, but hey simple things make me happy.)
Of course in true JJ style, I had to decorate it up!
